Garpastum

St. Petersburg, 1914. In der Hauptstadt des zerfallenden russischen Reiches hat der Erste Weltkrieg bereits begonnen. Die Brüder Andrej und Nikolaj gehören zu einer Gruppe von vier jungen Männern, Freunden, die auch gemeinsam Fußball spielen. Ihre Mutter ist verstorben, ihr Vater todkrank, und sie leben in der Wohnung eines Onkels. Andrej beginnt eine Affäre mit einer wohlhabenden Frau. Die Revolution von 1917 wird bald das Leben der Männer und ihre Welt zerschlagen und nur Trümmer zurücklassen, aber noch ist Zeit, Träumen nachzuhängen und sich der Leidenschaft für „garpastum“ (das alte römische Wort für ein Vorgängerspiel von Fußball) hinzugeben.

It is the story of the destiny of four friends who decide to put together a football team at the end of summer in 1914, on the verge of World War I. It is a film about youth and their sense of honour, the tragic love story between a wise, adult woman and a very young man, the Russian intelligentsia, the egoism of youth and, more generally, the end and birth of two historical eras. But it is also the story about my generation, which is very similar to the generation that lived at the beginning of the century. It is also about my family and friends, as we also lived through the break between two eras, even though it was less bloody for us. Our country has changed a lot in such a brief period of time, and this makes the film a very personal story for me. (Alexey Guerman, jr.)
