Innocence

Innocence, der zweite Spielfilm von Lucile Hadzihalilovic, basiert lose auf Frank Wedekinds Novelle „Mine-Haha oder Über die körperliche Erziehung der jungen Mädchen“. In einer Internatsschule, die in einem Wald versteckt in einer anderen Zeit liegt, steigt die sechsjährige Iris aus einem Sarg. Schnell lernt sie die Regeln der Schule, in der nach den Worten einer Lehrerin „Folgsamkeit der einzige Weg zum Glück“ zu sein scheint, und die eine irreale Angst vor der Welt draußen durchzieht. Langsam gewöhnt Iris sich an das neue Leben, auch wenn etwas an ihr nagt: Jeden Abend um neun, wenn die Lampen im Park eingeschaltet werden, begibt sich Bianca, die älteste Schülerin, zu einem geheimen Treffpunkt. Eines Abends folgt Iris ihr zu einem großen Haus, in dem die Lehrer wohnen ...

The key goes in the lock, the coffin opens and there is the naked six-year-old Iris. The new world into which she is born is comprised of a rural school building in a walled, fairy-tale park. Disobedience is punished and anyone who tries to flee has to stay forever. – Childlike innocence and the burden of growing up are not unknown film subjects, but the way in which Hadzihalilovic breaks with the traditional approach to these themes is innovative. Innocence is a magic, poetic dream with elements of theatre, psychological thriller and a trace of horror. With very stylised camera work, the mood rocks gently between innocent and sinister.
