Flotel Europa
Als der Regisseur dieses Films noch ein Kind war, stand er vor dem Flotel Europa – und war begeistert, dass dieses riesige Schiff im Hafen von Kopenhagen fortan das Zuhause für ihn, seinen älteren Bruder und seine Mutter sein würde. Zusammen mit etwa eintausend anderen Flüchtlingen aus Ex-Jugoslawien begann für sie auf dem Schiff ein neuer Lebensabschnitt. Dem Vater schickte die Familie Videobriefe in die alte Heimat. Durch die Montage des Materials, vor allem aber durch seine Erinnerungen an jene Zeit gelingt es Vladimir Tomic, aus Privatdokumenten, die auch für die Bebilderung von Flüchtlingselend und eine gestohlene Kindheit herhalten könnten, etwas Neues, Eigenes, Anderes zu machen. In 1992, a wave of refugees from the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina reached Denmark. With the existing refugee camps completely full, the Red Cross pulled a giant ship into the canals of Copenhagen. The ship, Flotel Europa, became a temporary home for a thousand people waiting for the decisions on their asylum applications. Among them, a 12-year-old boy, Vladimir, who fled Sarajevo together with his mother and older brother. They spent two years in the limbo of Flotel Europa. Two decades later, Vladimir Tomic takes us on a journey of growing up on a ship filled with echoes of the war.
Director's Biography
Vladimir Tomic was born in 1980 in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 2009, he graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He lives and works in Copenhagen. Vladimir Tomic's art films are played out in the field of contemporary art and experimental documentation.
