Was ist denn nur in Belgien los? Das kleine Land setzt mittlerweile die kräftigsten Impulse innerhalb des europäischen fantastischen Filmschaffens. Zu den Ausnahmetalenten Bruno Forzani & Hélène Cattet (zu Gast bei CROSSING EUROPE 2014) und Fabrice du Welz gesellt sich jetzt noch Jonas Govaerts: In seinem Debütfilm WELP schickt er eine Handvoll Pfadfinder-Kinder und ihre jugendlichen Betreuer in den tiefen, dunklen Wald. Dort soll eine grausame Kreatur hausen: Nur Außenseiter Sam bemerkt, dass an der Legende etwas dran ist, dass sich im grünen Dickicht tatsächlich etwas Grauenhaftes verbirgt. Und es kommt immer näher. WELP ist ein handwerklich beeindruckender Rückgriff auf die würdige Stilschule des US-Slasher, allerdings – zum Glück – ohne die gegenwärtig beinahe obligatorische ironische Doppelbödigkeit. CUB doesn’t play as a collection of clichés, but a love letter to the genre from a filmmaker who grew up wearing out Friday the 13th and Sleepaway Camp tapes and wanted to see if he could “make one like they used to”.
