Maidan

In MAIDAN fügt Loznitsa Aufnahmen jener zivilen Unruhen, die im Winter 2013/14 am Kiewer Maidan losbrachen, zu einem wirkmächtigen Zeitdokument zusammen. Die Aufstände, die aus einem friedlichen Protestmarsch heraus entstehen, sind eruptives Indiz der lange währenden ukrainischen Revolution. Mit der Absicht, den regierenden ukrainischen Präsidenten Wiktor Janukowitsch zu stürzen, haben sich die Protestierenden auf dem Maidan versammelt. Als sie jedoch mit der Polizei aneinandergeraten – oder besser gesagt die Polizei an sie gerät –, setzen Straßenschlachten ein, und die Gewalt nimmt überhand. Loznitsa passt einzelne Sequenzen des Protestverlaufs in eine streng geordnete Form ein, verharrt dabei konsequent am zentralen Schauplatz des Geschehens, dem Kiewer Maidan. Schleichend ergibt sich so ein eindringliches Bild, nämlich das der nationalen Neudefinition.

MAIDAN chronicles the civil uprising against the regime of president Yanukovych that took place in Kiev (Ukraine) in the winter of 2013/14. The film follows the progress of the revolution: from peaceful rallies, half a million strong, in the Maidan square, to the bloody street battles between protestors and riot police. Maidan is a portrait of an awakening nation, rediscovering its identity.

Director's Biography

Sergei Loznitsa was born 1964 in Belarus and grew up in the Ukraine. Graduated from the Russian State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in Moscow in 1997. He has been making documentary films since 1996 and has received numerous national and international awards. In 2010 Loznitsa’s feature debut MY JOY premiered in the main competition at the Festival de Cannes followed by IN THE FOG in 2012 and MAIDAN in 2014.
