The Miracle of Saint Anthony
Jedes Jahr Mitte Juni findet in Santo António de Mixões da Serra ein traditionelles Festival zu Ehren des portugiesischen Schutzpatrons Santo António statt. Man sagt, der Schutzpatron hilft, verlorene Dinge wiederzufinden. In Portugal gilt er darüber hinaus als Beschützer der Tiere, wacht über Ehen und reine Seelen. Daher kommt es, dass die lokalen Bäuerinnen und Bauern ihre Tiere – Kühe, Pferde, Hunde, Katzen, Hühner, Hasen – immer am 12. oder 13. des Monats zur Kirche bringen, um sie dort segnen zu lassen. Diese Praxis wird seit Generationen gepflegt und weitergegeben. Und so pilgern Mensch und Tier noch heute, Hunderte Jahre nach der Heiligsprechung Antónios, zum Kirchenplatz in den Bergen, um gemeinsam ein religiöses Fest zu begehen. O MILAGRE DE SANTO ANTÓNIO entstand als Auftragswerk anlässlich der 22. Festivalausgabe von Curtas Vila do Conde.
In the middle of June, the village of Santo António de Mixões da Serra in the Valdreu region of Northern Portugal honors its Patron Saint with a very special festival. On this day, the local farmers bring their animals to the church – cows, horses, dogs, cats, chickens, rabbits – to be blessed. This ancient tradition is passed from generation to generation, and today, just as hundreds of years ago, animals and people flock up the mountain roads to the church square to become a part of the religious festival. The film is about this miracle.
Regie Biografie
Sergei Loznitsa was born 1964 in Belarus and grew up in the Ukraine. Graduated from the Russian State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in Moscow in 1997. He has been making documentary films since 1996 and has received numerous national and international awards. In 2010 Loznitsa’s feature debut MY JOY premiered in the main competition at the Festival de Cannes followed by IN THE FOG in 2012 and MAIDAN in 2014.
