Eine kleine Gruppe schwarzer Silhouetten durchwandert die karge Landschaft am Weißen Meer. Es ist klirrend kalt, rundum gibt es nur vereinzelte Holzhütten. Unter Schnee und Eis scheinen Fische zu schwimmen, zumindest verbringen die Männer einen Gutteil der Zeit mit ihren Fischernetzen. So hat das Leben am Meer wohl schon immer ausgesehen. Oder ist die finale Einstellung als optimistisches Aufbrechen in einer erstarrten, festgefahrenen Situation zu verstehen?

In ARTEL, we follow a group of small black silhouettes on a wide white landscape with a couple of log cabins. Beneath the snow and ice they are walking on, fish are swimming. In any case, the men spend a lot of time dealing with some fishing nets. If they did not use a chainsaw to make a hole in the ice, the film could just as well have been made 80 years ago. The documentary seems to say that life by the sea has always looked like this and it always will. Or is the final shot, when the ice breaks and the water flows, a reference to the old Soviet masters and an optimistic symbol of imminent change in a frozen social situation? Director's Biography
Sergei Loznitsa was born 1964 in Belarus and grew up in the Ukraine. Graduated from the Russian State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in Moscow in 1997. He has been making documentary films since 1996 and has received numerous national and international awards. In 2010 Loznitsa’s feature debut MY JOY premiered in the main competition at the Festival de Cannes followed by IN THE FOG in 2012 and MAIDAN in 2014.
