YAAAS! School Screenings

The YAAAS! Competition consists of current European productions, selected by the YAAAS! Young Programmers. After an introduction to the process of curating a film festival in late autumn they came to a selection of seven feature-length fiction films (all of them celebrating their Austrian premiere), that deal with the lived realities of youths and young adults in various different ways.

Three YAAAS! Competition will also be offered as special school screenings. The Young Programmers will attend every screening and present the films, as well as lead Q&A sessions with the attending film guests. Comprehensive school materials (in German only) aim to aid the preparation and follow-up of the screenings.

LE LYCÉEN / DER GYMNASIAST

(FR 2022, Director: Christophe Honoré, 123 min, French with German subtitles) – Fiction Film │Austrian Premiere

WINTER BOY follows 17-year-old Lucas who, after a family tragedy, joins his older brother (Vincent Lacoste) in Paris, where he embarks on an exploration of his sexuality. Or rather, he pursues it further, as Lucas is already very comfortable with his gay identity and desire. Energetic, lyrical and fiercely candid, this psychologically and emotionally mature film features the fine performances you’d expect from Binoche and Lacoste, but also a revelation in engaging and altogether fearless newcomer Paul Kircher. (Jonathan Romney, BFI London Film Festival)

For Franky, life isn’t easy. To people around her, she seems unpredictable and erratic. But, in actual fact, she suffers from a multiple personality disorder. Inside, she lives with four other characters called Lenny, Frank, Ella and Frau Franke in an old-fashioned hotel in the middle of nowhere. But, in real life, all five inhabit Franky’s body at different times and occasionally disrupt her attempts at a love life ... (Skena Lux, German Films Quarterly)
