Alexander Bytschok lebt in Kiew, Zahava Stessel in Brooklyn, NY, Ivan Ivanji ist in Belgrad zuhause und Raymond Renaud in einem kleinen Dorf irgendwo in Frankreich. Alle vier haben das Konzentrationslager Buchenwald überlebt. Wie aber ist dieses „Überleben“ verlaufen? Was ist mit dem nicht unbeträchtlichen Rest, dem „Danach“? Befreit von der Last, Zeitzeuge zu sein, erzählen diese Vier und die Kamera schaut sich derweil mit diskreter Neugier in ihren Lebensräumen um. Mit der Normalität, die so sicht- und hörbar wird, stellt sich eine Würde her, die ohne Opferbegriff auskommt. Auch das ist eine Art der Befreiung. (Alexandra Seitz)
This film starts with the current everyday lives of four survivors of Nazi concentration and extermination camps. Their monologues – about survival, about coming home, about their creations and their jobs, about their families – are the framework for the documentary. Filmed in their homes and cities, they resolutely find the words to tell their stories: Raymond Renaud while tilling his wonderful garden in rural France, Ivan Ivanji while writing novels in a Belgrade tower block, Zahava Stessel while riding the New York subway, Aleksandr Bytschok while eating with his family in Kiev. Despite their advanced age, all four continue to bear witness, visit schools, write books, give public interviews. (Stiftung Gedenkstätten Buchenwald und Mittelbau-Dora)
