New York, New York

I discovered Scorsese’s NEW YORK, NEW YORK while at film school in the early 80s. It immediately made a personal connection, since I was in a difficult relationship that reminded me of the relationship between Francine and Jimmy. But it also connected to my love of Hollywood musicals, and fed straight into my graduation film CAPRICE. I believe films can be companions, and Scorsese’s homage to the heyday of Hollywood musicals has resonated with me over the years. It was again on my mind when I was conceiving EXHIBITION. He brilliantly depicts the turbulent relationship of two artists trying to live together in a way I have not seen before or since. (Joanna Hogg)
