Comme des Voleurs (à l’Est) is a peculiar comedy about searching for the lost joy of living. In this “autofiction”, director Baier plays the character Lionel Baier, a lovable soulmate of Woody Allen’s, who over night succumbs to a Poland euphoria and runs away with his sister to Warsaw in the face of a looming family crisis. Unexpectedly tipping into a “road movie”, Comme des Voleurs (à l’Est) quotes Agnès Varda and Eli Roth (Hostel). Most of all, though, the screenwriter Lionel Baier prefers to direct his irony against the figure Lionel Baier: a sensitive young man searching for Poland with his soul, even though neither paprika sausage nor buffalo grass vodka agrees with him.
