Monika und Toník leben in einer kleinen tschechischen Industriestadt neben einer Fabrik; durch Toníks Dach läuft der Regen ins Wohnzimmer. Monikas Nachbarin Dascha hat zwei Kinder, einen verheirateten Liebhaber und eine abgelebte Wohnung. Wider Willen springt Monika als Ersatzmutter ein. Toník hilft ihr, weil er seit Längerem heimlich in sie verliebt ist. Aber zwischen einer resignierten Elterngeneration, einer von der lokalen Industrie gebeutelten Landschaft und der vagen Sehnsucht nach Flucht, Wohlstand oder menschlicher Wärme kann ihr Glück nicht von langer Dauer sein. Monika und Toník haben noch andere Pläne, ihr Glück bleibt eine unscharfe Ahnung und Erinnerung an das, was möglich gewesen wäre.

Bohdan Sláma (Wild Bees) continues his wry exploration of the search for love and contentment on the sombre fringes of the Czech Republic. Monika, Toník and Dasha are friends from the same housing project near a huge factory. When Dasha enters a psychiatric ward, Monika and Toník take in her kids and their lives change for the better. Sláma delves deeply into the emotional lives of his characters; by filming the picture over a full year, he gives us the chance to see children grow and relationships bloom.
