Oceanul Mare

"In Oceanul Mare erscheint das Meer als eine Metapher. Unvermittelt öffnet sich der Blick auf eine graue, endlose Weite. Zum Rauschen der Wellen erzählt eine Stimme vom Risiko, bzw. der existenziellen Verlorenheit, die das Leben und Überleben in der Fremde mit sich bringen kann. In einer anderen Einstellung blickt die Kamera durch ein Fenster, vor dem ein Aquarium steht. Dies bemerkt man jedoch erst, als sich plötzlich ein Fisch auf der Bildfläche zeigt, der schwimmend, auf dem Weg nach oben' ist, während man durch die Scheibe hindurch auf einen trostlosen Wohnblock schaut." The film centers on three Chinese people in Bucharest, who migrated there in the early 1990s. It follows their paths through Romania's metropolis and traces their varying connections with Europe's largest Chinese market on the periphery of the city. Episode by episode, it accompanies the central characters through the striking contrasts of their daily routines and business milieus, telling a story of what it is like to be foreign and of cultural displacement. Ultimately, the story underscores the challenge to immerse oneself into the unknown while continually reinventing oneself in the process. (sixpackfilm)

Director's Biography
Katharina Copony
Born 1972 in Graz. She lives and works as a freelance filmmaker in Berlin and Vienna, and studied visual media design at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna with Peter Weibel and at the HdK Berlin. Video art, photography and films since 1996. Artist in residence in Moriya (JPN), Rome, London, Sarajevo. She received several awards for her work.
