Dr. Georgi Lulchevs Heim für psychisch kranke Männer befindet sich in einem alten Kloster in Podgumer, rund zwanzig Kilometer von der Hauptstadt Sofia entfernt. In einem Land, in dem ein Großteil der Bevölkerung in Armut lebt, ist jeder Tag im Heim geprägt vom ökonomischen Überlebenskampf. Das Budget ist völlig unzureichend, die Unterstützung minimal. Um die Geldmittel wenigstens etwas aufzubessern und die Existenz des Heimes zu sichern, hat Dr. Lulchev während der letzen 15 Jahre zum Teil bizarre Geschäftsideen erdacht und versucht, mit seinen Patienten in die Tat umzusetzen. Trotz einiger Fehlschläge setzt er diesen Weg mit unermüdlichem Enthusiasmus fort.

The film is a sometimes hilariously funny group portrait of the director of a crumbling psychiatric hospital, its wards and staff. Psychiatrist and neurologist Georgi Lulchev is presented as a great idealist and dreamer. For therapeutic and practical reasons, he wants to involve his patients in business enterprises. He tirelessly searches for sponsors; he understands accounting and methodically fills out his betting tickets. For his aim is to turn the old monastery-hospital into a dignified and modern home for his wards. He sees them as his family and he tries in every way to make the conditions for their existence in involuntary confinement more humane. His tolerant wife‘s comments introduce a humorous tone to the film.
