WHAT IS MIOB?
The passion for young cinema from Europe and the desire to provide an appropriate platform for it: This is how the European festival network MOVING IMAGES - OPEN BORDERS (MIOB) was born. Initiated by Crossing Europe in 2017, it brings together the European Film Festival Palić (RS), Les Arcs European Film Festival (FR), Scanorama European Film Forum (LT), Trieste Film Festival (IT) and FilmFestival Cottbus (DE), six film festivals with a European focus, and has since established itself as a prime example of international festival cooperation. The cooperation takes place on an artistic, organizational and technological level and includes numerous activities such as workshops, the development of joint innovation tools (e.g. Green Charter for Film Festivals, cross-festival audience survey) and the organization of two film awards.
The regular exchange between the partner festivals picked up speed in 2019. Relevant topics include intensifying the promotion, representation and distribution of European filmmaking, joint marketing activities, workshops, training sessions and regular meetings with the aim of taking immediate and sustainable measures within the European festival map. MIOB is 100% dedicated to European creative filmmaking and gives all participating partner festivals the opportunity to benefit from the exchange of experience on an organizational and programmatic level in a long-term and practical manner. Since autumn 2020, MIOB has also been supported by the EU's Creative Europe MEDIA program.
Sustainable festival work (In 2026, a professional “green consultant” will conduct a monitoring assessment for the second time) and the promotion of accessibility will be among the focal points of work in the coming months, as will the topics of audience building and mental health in the cultural sector.

PROJECTS & ACTIVITIES (a selection)
MIOB competitions
Every year, MIOB organizes two international competitions for current European short and feature-length films. The MIOB NEW VISION AWARD (€ 3,000; feature-length films) recognizes a first or second European feature or documentary film that deserves wider international recognition. In 2026, it will once again be handed out at the Crossing Europe Awards ceremony; the selection will be made by an international jury: Davide Abbatescianni (IT) – film critic, Ivan Bakrač (ME) – film director and festival programmer, Katharina Stumm (DE) – program manager at Connecting Cottbus.
Contenders for the MIOB IN SHORTS Online Audience Award (€1,000) include recent European short films nominated by MIOB members.
Sustainable festival work - Green Charter for Film Festivals & Green Consultant
As organizers and cultural decision-makers, film festivals have a responsibility to raise awareness of social issues among audiences and the industry. Climate change has become the world's most important challenge, prompting festival network members to change their own practices to reduce the environmental impact of the film festivals we organize. For this reason, the MIOB network has developed a charter for sustainable festival work to create a common assessment basis for film festivals. This aims to define internal processes of festival organization and methods of data collection that are necessary to design strategies and define goals to be achieved in the coming years. The Green Charter is seen as the first step in a more general collective movement within the film festival landscape.
Further information on the MIOB Green Charter for Film Festivals Award can be found on the Green Charter website.
LAB of Cultural, Creative and Festival Journalism
The Lab of Cultural, Creative and Festival Journalism is a professional training initiative that takes place across Europe over several months. This year, in cooperation with Cineuropa, it is being held for the fifth time at several network festivals, including Crossing Europe for the first time.
In April, an international group of aspiring film critics and journalists will have the opportunity to attend the festival free of charge and participate in writing workshops led by the experienced film critic and journalist Vladan Petkovic.
Audience Survey (2024-2026 - ongoing project)
MIOB co-designed and commissioned a comprehensive, cross-festival audience survey, which was conducted at six MIOB partner festivals across Europe in 2024. The aim was to obtain precise (demographic) data on audience behavior and structure on the one hand, and to open up a dialogue with visitors and give them the opportunity to share their festival experiences and express wishes and suggestions for improvement on the other. In the medium term, the results should serve as a catalyst for audience building. The findings were evaluated and incorporated into the planning of the 2025 festival edition. Based on the insights gained, another audience survey will be conducted in 2026.

The 2025 festival edition marked the start of a two-year monitoring process by a professional “Green Consultant". We are delighted to have found Brigitte Bidovec, an expert with many years of festival experience in the field of sustainability and social responsibility!
Promoting accessibility will also be a focus of our work in the coming months, as will the topics of audience building and mental health in the cultural sector.
