The Bell
The story goes that 300 years ago, during the Lithuanian-Swedish war, the bell of Plateliai church was taken down from the tower. When it was moved across the lake near Kastel (The Castle) Island, it was hit by a cannonball. The bell broke through the ice and sunk. Rumor has it that even today, if one listens carefully, one can still hear the bell ringing from the dephts of the lake. In 2006, a film crew accompanied by divers embarked on the search for the mystery-enshrouded bell. However, the expedition is much more than merely a quest for the lost treasures of history: it is a peculiar journey in time, memories, and the metaphysical world of ancient legends.
Director's Biography
Audrius Stonys, geb. 1966 in Vilnius. Studierte am Konservatorium Vilnius und arbeitete anschließend in Jonas Mekas’ Anthology Film Archive in New York. Unterrichtete 2004-2005 in Kopenhagen und 2006 in Tokio Dokumentarfilm. Stonys ist Mitglied der Europäischen Filmakademie (EFA) und des European Documentary Network (EDN). Er realisierte 14 Filme als unabhängiger Regisseur und Produzent. Audrius Stonys gilt als Hauptvertreter der „poetischen Dokumentation“, die Anfang der Neunziger Jahre in Litauen ihren Anfang nahm. Gemeinsam mit seinen beiden Kollegen Arūnas Matelis und Šarūnas Bartas war dem Schaffen des renommierten Filmemachers beim 5. Crossing Europe Festival ein Tribute gewidmet.
